Pastoral Search Committee Update
At the May 25, 2021 BMCC trustee meeting, Bill Burrows gave an update about the work of the Pastoral Search Committee:
The committee has seven members. They are: Judy Bean, Bill Burrows, Terry McSweeney, Joan Robinson, Dan Conable, Miyako Schanely and Lorraine Schunck.
Over the past eight months, the committee has held eight meetings and many other individual workshops.
The committee surveyed the congregation and compiled those survey results to understand the demographics of the respondents and to also discern “what matters” to the congregation from the responses.
The committee has updated the pastor’s job description and Chapel profile. They are currently seeking trustee feedback on these documents. Once the trustees have submitted final edits, the Pastoral Search Committee will ask the webmaster to post them on the BMCC website. This will happen after the annual meeting in August, 2021.
The committee will receive application packets from pastor candidates for ten months. All applications of candidates will be due June 30, 2022 which will allow the Chapel 14 months to discern a new pastor to be recommended to the Chapel trustees by August, 2023.
The Chapel website and recorded services will be very helpful for the candidate search process.
The summer of 2023 will be Reverend McCaughey’s 25th year. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING, DICK AND MEREDITH!
September, 2020 Statement:
At the August Annual Meeting of Big Moose Community Chapel, President Sara Burrows announced the makeup of a seven-member Pastoral Search Committee. The committee is charged with identifying a candidate to replace Rev. Richard McCaughey, who has announced his plans to retire after the summer 2023 season. During its first meeting, the committee discovered that, as a group, they have had more than 230 cumulative years of involvement in the life of the Chapel. For some, this experience goes back to childhood. Besides worshipping in Big Moose at the Chapel, Search Committee members have been regular attendees or members of churches from more than a dozen different denominations, as well as non-affiliated independent churches.
The Committee has set the following schedule for its work over the coming year:
Survey the congregation (regular and occasional attendees) on matters related to the minister’s role and worship styles – Nov. 10, 2020 – Jan. 31, 2021
Seek Trustee guidance on aspects of the profile of the Chapel that will be shared with minister candidates – February - March, 2021
Present a draft job description and a profile of the Chapel for discussion in the May, 2021 Trustee meeting
Finalize the job description and profile for adoption at the August, 2021 Trustee meeting following the Chapel’s Annual Meeting
Questions and suggestions about the committee’s work should be directed to committee member Lorraine Schunck (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Please note that the committee is not accepting suggestion names of candidates or applications at this time.
